(More customer reviews)This futon frame is pretty well made, and not too hard to put together even though I am not that handy with tools. I did use a power tool to put the screws in, and there were naturally quite a few. Without the power tool it undoubtably would have been harder to do. The directions were good, though, so there weren't any terribly muddled moments during the assembly. The assembled frame is sturdy and is pretty easy to put into recliner mode. I just wish that there were more slats, because my all-cotton futon tends to follow the dips between the slats which isn't too comfortable for sleeping. I put an inexpensive closed cell mat between the futon and the frame to help with that.

J-Life Japanese Traditional Shiki Futon - TWIN SIZE (shikibuton) Review

(More customer reviews)I've been sleeping every night on this futon for more than a year now, and am very happy with it. The first thing I noticed when I got it was its weight. It weighs about 27 pounds, and is a little unwieldy to transport. I also noticed a smell that I assume is the boric acid which is used as a fire retardant. The smell has diminished with time so that it isn't really noticeable any more.
The construction of the mattress is very solid. It has a very tough outer cover over a 4 inch layer of thick cotton batting. There is also a zipper to allow access to the batting, or perhaps to allow the cover to be washed (although I don't think that would be advisable).
Because of the firmness of this mattress, I found that it took a little time to adjust to it after sleeping on a regular mattress. Also, my body doesn't sink into the mattress as much, which makes it a little harder to sleep on my side. I've found that it helps to use a Japanese style pillow (such as this one: Organic Buckwheat Pillow - Japanese Size (14" x 20")) to give my neck better support.
With use, the cotton tends to compress. I've noticed a definite depression where the heaviest part of my body rests. To remedy this, every so often it helps to lift up the mattress and drop it from several feet onto the ground, or else to hang it up and beat it with a stick or bat (the manufacturer's care instructions actually recommend this!).
Pros:
+ Firm, but not overly so.
+ Comfortable enough to sleep on every night.
+ Solid, durable construction.
+ Folds up easily for storage.
+ Can be transported much easier than a normal mattress.
Cons:
- Compresses with use (although this can be remedied with proper care).
- Short length makes it non-ideal for tall people (over 6').
- A bit pricey (but worth it).
I would definitely buy this again given the choice. Combined with a Japanese style pillow, it is the ultimate minimalist bed.

It still smells of the boric acid, though I'm sure that'll fade as it's used. My only complaint is that I wish it and the other that I had ordered had arrived in the same box rather then being shipped separately, but I'm not going to mark down for that as the product is all that I expected. Future purchaser be warned, however, that the name for the color you are ordering is more accurate then the color of the picture, which I had expected and hoped for, but someone else might be disappointed to get something that isn't an exact color match. As it is, I can't wait for the other that I ordered so that my husband and I may start to use them. Thank you futonfurniture.

(More customer reviews)I initially purchased this to try as an economical solution for my apartment. After a few nights I have been in bliss on this futon. I had back surgery a few years ago and have had trouble finding a bed or couch I am really comfortable on and can still wake up without feeling like an old man. From the first night on this futon I have slept well and felt great when I got up. It saves a lot of room as I fold it up when I get up in the morning. Shipping took less than a week by fed-ex. I would have given it a full 5 stars; however, as others have reviewed on this futon in the other colors and coverings, it does have an odd chemical odor that could be troublesome to someone sensitive to that sort of thing. Perhaps as others have surmised, it has to do with fire retardant treatments. I hope it does fade eventually, but if it doesn't it is not a deal breaker for me.

(For sanitation, I will of course be using clean sheets for each client anyway.) I wasn't sure that I wanted it, but also I didn't want to need it and not be able to order the cover separately.
As a licensed massage therapist, I have taken more than 32 hours of Thai massage training and this is exactly what I was looking for in a mat - I didn't want to make do with a futon or replica (60x80 "queen size" bed toppers). I got the 66 x 80 and I feel like it will definitely be enough space for both client and practitioner. It's very comfortable. So far I'm very happy.

I wanted something comfortable to sleep on and I sleep on similar mattresses when I visit friends in Germany. In Germany they don't typically use mattresses with springs and I like this. SO I ordered this mattress. I am short so it is perfect for me but if you are tall it would not be comfortable. I have decided to use this mattress for a while when I do get my own place since the firmness is good for my back. If you prefer softness then I would not recommend this, but if you are short and like the firmness then this is perfect.

(More customer reviews)i've been sleeping on this futon for a few weeks now and i love it. i was going to get a sofa sleeper as a bed for my tiny apartment but now i've decided to save the space and use this as my bed. it's not too hard and not too soft, and it rolls up easily into a bundle the size of a large sleeping bag. i originally got it so my family could have somewhere to sleep when they visit-- and before i found it i'd already got a couple of twin-size foldable mattresses, but this futon is much more comfortable, and about 30 percent cheaper. but do note that while you can unzip the material, there's loose stuffing inside so plan on using sheets regularly and not washing it. another plus-- the ship date was a month away but it actually came in just a few days.

It took up the entire back seat. It is heavy and bulky. Not the ideal item you would want to take camping. Unless you have a big truck or trailer, and great storage at home. It is also not that comfortable as well. It is like an extra firm mattress.
