(More customer reviews)I just bought one of these a couple of days ago at the local lumber yard. Although it's not stylish or friendly to bare feet, I'm pleased with it. Standing in the aisle at the store, I ultimately picked the largest one they sold, which is 18x30. It looked plenty big enough, and I congratulated myself on finding "a really big one." When I came home, I realized that 18x30 is the smallest size I would consider using. The front door is about 34 inches wide. 18x30 is the "normal" size for a doormat. I'm not sure why they even make the tiny ones.
I particularly like the fact that there's no plastic backing. The mat is basically braided underneath, so water and dirt will fall through instead of being permanently trapped between the fibers. Then I can sweep up the dirt and be rid of it. The decorative doormats that I looked at all boasted a "durable backing" that basically meant "once you get some dirt on this, you'll never get it out again."
The packaging warns against using it in an unprotected area. I'm really not sure what that means. We have mild weather, so the biggest risk here is that it will get wet. Since it's a natural tree-fiber product, I expect that it will someday make like a leaf and wilt. However, since I don't think it's going to be sitting in pools of water, I expect it to last a long time.
If you (or the kids) like to step outside in your bare feet, you probably won't like this doormat. It's a little bit like walking on an old-fashioned hairbrush. If you step outside in bare feet to pick up the paper or check the mailbox, then you may be happier with a non-bristle style doormat.
UPDATE: Two and a half years later, it's still in very good, usable condition.
