We decided to buy it mostly because we grew tired of filling up our old small dog bowl 3-5 times a day. We have a rather large dog, so he tends to drink a lot of water.
Not only did this help with us having to fill it up every day, but it also keeps his water extremely fresh. Due to the water constantly moving, and because of the filter built in.
The pump for it isn't anything mind blowing, it seems like a rather cheap pump that is used for the bottom of a fish tank. We haven't had any problems with the pump yet at all.
The only problem my girlfriend has complained about is the fact that it is indeed so large. And she takes the whole bowl out like it says to, and fills it up with water when it's empty. Making it rather heavy when taking it back to place it on the base.
I've learned that you can take a pitcher of water and simply pour it on the blue bowl on the outside, and it will get pulled back into the bowl. Since overflow water already flows over the top and down the side of the blue bowl already, I see no issue with this. It's meant to flow over it like that so smaller dogs can actually drink from there. Our dog doesn't bother with it, he goes for the source. The only problem with this is that you can only pour so much in there at once this way, since it takes a moment for it to get sucked back into the bowl by the pump. But still beats carrying the heavy thing over to the sink and back.
At first we wasn't sure our dog was going to like it. He seemed really weirded out by it at first, and wouldn't really drink out of it. It took him a while to figure out that it was his new dog bowl, and now he loves it and has managed to pretty much empty the entire thing in as little as 3 days (he is a really big dog...) With the bowl sitting much higher up off the ground, it seems that it is easier on him to get something to drink. Which is also another huge plus.
I would recommend this to any pet owner, it's a great product so far. Allows you to not have to worry about watering your pet or keeping the water fresh for days. So you could even go on a weekend trip and not have to worry about your dog at home not having enough fresh water.
