(More customer reviews)Purchased this for my leopard gecko's 20 gallon long tank. The pad was easy to install and the packaging wasn't excessive. The pad took a little bit to heat up and i was worried it was defective, but after a few minutes it was obvious that it was working. The thermometer at the top of the tank now holds between 72* and 76*; it is much warmer down on the bottom of the tank and it manages to hold this in a room which fluctuates between 65* and 72*. I am pleased with it for the price. The only complaint I have is that the little rubber feet included to keep the tank elevated off the power cord do not stick at all. They fall off the minute I lift the tank for any reason, but since I don't do that often, they're fine. At least they're larger than the ones that came with my last heating pad.

(More customer reviews)Even though I've been starting seeds for years, this is the first year that I used a heat mat. It helped a lot! The seeds were much quicker to sprout. In fact I had a control group. One seed starting tray on the mat, and another one by itself. The seeds on the mat always came up faster. Now I wish I had gotten a bigger mat, or more of them. My only complaint is that it is not quite as wide as I would like. But it works well and I will be buying more for next year's seeds.

(More customer reviews)I got this from Amazon because they were hard to find locally. Dont you know it Lowes and Home Depot have started carrying them now for the same price. This does not have the grow media with it so I had to go to Lowes to get some starter soil for it where I saw Lowes had started carrying them and they had the media included.Yeah I was pissed. This one has a taller dome which was a major attraction for me but the moisture condenses on the dome runs down the sides and pours out of the planter as the dome lip sits on the outside of the tray. So if you have this in the house its gonna make a mess unless you put the tray in a bigger tray to catch the water. So buy it locally that way if you dont like it its easy to return.

(More customer reviews)I knew I would need a heat mat that would accommodate at least 5 full flats of seedlings- and this is the right size for that number. Has done my tomatoes and peppers well over the last 6 weeks or so. Also, it works nicely with 4 ft long florescent grow lights (you really need these when growing plants from seed indoors, even if you have them near the window, or else the plants become too leggy and then are prone to disease). Also, note that you will require a seed mat thermometer unit in addition to the mat in order to keep the seedlings at a constant ideal temperature- they all work like this, not a deficiency of the heat mat- I got a "hydro-farm" one for around $30... So, happy growing!

It's adequate for starting plants from seed, but my main complaint is that for what you get, it's way too expensive. I believe a fair price for this item would be around $20, NOT $40. If you do decide to purchase a germination station like this one, buy the one with the taller top - it doesn't take long before the new plants start running into the 2" tall lid.

(More customer reviews)I am using this mat to keep a constant temperature on my Kombucha brew. Using a standard heating pad, this theromstat does the job. I'm very pleased with it. I can keep the temperature at 79 degrees and not have to have a heating pad constantly on. Keep the suction cup clean so it doesn't pop off the glass and a thermometer handy to monitor the temperature.

Hydrofarm Seedling Heat Mat Review

(More customer reviews)We are home gardeners and have tried many ways to provide bottom-heat for vegetable seed germination -- atop my always-on docked laptop was the most effective but the space was tiny. We bought a 20" x 20" heat mat and now have the right tool for the job. We set it up on a card table and found that it was not providing sufficient heat to the soil in the trays above. After an overnight on the mat, the soil surface was less than 10 degrees above ambient temperature. The room where the seeds are was 60 degrees overnight, and the soil surface in the trays was 68 degrees -- certainly not good enough for eggplant germination. I used an infrared thermometer (Raytek Minitemp MT6 here on Amazon) to check all temps. The exposed mat surface (no tray on top) was 82 degrees. I felt the surface on the underside of the card able and it was definitely warm, indicating heat loss downward. I wanted all of the heat to go up into the soil, so I cut a piece of rigid-foam insulation just slightly larger than the heat mat (22" x 22") and put it under the mat. Within 15 minutes the exposed surface of the mat was at 97 degrees and when I moved a tray to measure the temp of the mat beneath a tray, it was at 115 degrees. 2 hours later, the soil surface temperature was at 85 degrees. I am now confident the soil will get enough heat for proper germination, and I will begin using the heat mat thermostat to regulate soil temps based on the particular seeds we're starting (search the Web for "vegetable seed germination temperatures" to find one of the many reference charts available). We can also regulate temperature by covering or uncovering the trays to change the rate of evaporative cooling. We are well aware that covered soil is more prone to damping off/seedling death, which we now control with a spray of strong-brewed chamomile tea.
