You must, of course, apply pressure yourself (or use clamps) to keep the rule from moving, but its advantage over the Logan mat cutters is that you can use it to cut any size mat and to cut the outer edges of a mat---32X40 inch mat board won't fit in most of Logan's cutters. Before discovering this tool, I used to remove the stop from my Logan mat cutters so that I could slide a long sheet through without bending it over the stop. This tool eliminates the need to do that. It's handy to have around.

(More customer reviews)The Logan 450 lets you make perfect mats with consistency and accuracy. It handles full sized 32 x 40 mat boards and both 1/8" and 3/16" foam core boards. This is a big, solid, well-made device. You need the top of a table or workbench to use it. There's a smaller model (Logan 250) that takes 20 x 16 mat board, but it's more economical to buy the 32 x 40 boards.
I bought it because I make 8x10 and 11x14 prints often enough to make it a worthwhile convenience. There's a huge choice of colors if you go to an art store and buy full sheets of mat board rather than pre-cut mats, and the cost of a full sheet is about the same as one precut 8x10 or 8x12 precut mat.
Just follow the instructions very carefully, and take your time. There's a DVD packed inside that worth looking at - maybe worth looking at a couple of times. The printed instruction book is quite clear. There's a stop included for repetitive cuts that makes it easy to cut two or three mats exactly the same size.
You may also want a 16" or longer steel or aluminum ruler. If you're careful, you won't need to do any touch-up surgery with a utilty knife (razor knife) but it's not a bad idea to have one close by just in case.

Compact 32 Inch Mat Cutter Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this about a year ago to save on framing our wedding pictures. I knew less than nothing about mat cutting, but the directions were clear and the process was fairly intuitive.
The good:
Simple to operate, good instructions. Great for smaller, pre-sized pieces. Offers the opportunity to save money and be more flexible with mat designs.
The Bad:
No squaring arm for cutting down full mat sheets. This is a real drag as full sheets are the most economical way to go. Since it has the straight cutting head, I assumed it would make provisions for cutting large pieces. In addition, the straight cutting head pivots somewhat on the guide rail, leading to slightly wavy cuts. I became aware of this and am now careful to try and avoid it, but its been a consistent problem. If one cut is off, especially when making complex or multi layered mats, the whole thing will be off. Finally, the mat width is limited to 4.5 inches. Yes, its plainly noted on the box. I thought that would be plenty. It isn't. This isn't a flaw in the product, more of a heads up to potential buyers.
Overall it is a decent product. I understand its more of an introductory model, but the manufacturer seems to have skimped in some areas that in my opinion are crucial to the success of the eventual user.
If I had it to do over again, I'd spend the extra money and go for a slightly larger model with a squaring arm and more professional features.
