Flat and drop coats will be cut longer than stand up coats. Tilting the clipper slightly towards the teeth will clip shorter while tilting slightly towards the rear of the blade will leave the coat longer. Clipping with the lay of coat will leave more length while clipping against the growth will cut shorter. Experimenting with the combs is the best way to find out what works best for your breed.
