(More customer reviews)This appears to be the same material as Remay or Reemay floating row cover used in gardens for easier and faster germination. Reemay is sold in multiple sizes by mail order from several gardening catalogs. Both Reemay and Grass Fast reduce evaporation from the soil and maybe keep the soil a couple of degrees warmer. Grass seed must be kept moist. Moistening it then letting it dry means no germination. I've used Grass Fast more than once and am pleased that I don't have to water as frequently to avoid the deadly drying out. Germination rate is outstanding. Testing the soil for moisture with a finger isn't high tech, but it works for me and helps me determine when to water.It also helps to water the seed bed before putting the Grass Fast down, especially if there is a slope, because some, not all, of the water will run downhill as one reviewer mentioned . The same reviewer recommended using hay instead. Do not use hay. It will contain weed seeds. Straw can be an alternative to Grass Fast and it is often used commercially, but commercially, it is chopped into short pieces and blown over the area. Good luck finding clean straw, transporting it, and applying it evenly -- too thick and it will smother the seedlings -- too thin and the soil will dry out. For holding Grass Fast in place I found that large landscaping staples such as the kind that are sold for holding landscaping fabric in place are much better than stakes. To make the staples easier to find and remove, I wrap a short length of brightly colored plastic tape at the top of each staple. This really is great stuff. For really large areas it can get pricey though.
