(More customer reviews)I used to use wood mulch around my newly planted trees. It was hard to keep the chips away from the trunk and out of the surrounding lawn (I hated when the lawnmower would create a stray chip projectile). So I got 5 of these mats at a local garden dept. in the spring. They do a pretty good job of keeping weeds and grass away from the base of the tree. It is very easy to mow around these - no need to use the string trimmer and risk wounding the tree. They let water through, no problem (I use a hydrometer to check, and the moisture is fine compared to the neighboring grass). But, these mats are not the perfect solution. St. Augustine's grass can easily run under the mats where it turns yellow and is not nearly as aggressive as if it were left unabated, but still needs tending. Weeds can grow through the seam they leave for you to cut the ring to fit around an established tree, even if you don't cut it. So I give these mulch rings four stars, but they're my product of choice until something better comes out.
