It's well thought out yet very simple. Just a rubber pad that sits on top of a large sheet of metal (which has three edges bent upwards).
The tray is the perfect size to go with my Pasquini Liva Moka grinder. I put the grinder on the back quarter of the tray to give me plenty of room for dosing and tamping. I now get nearly zero grinds anywhere but on the tray, and those grounds are easy to simply pour into the garbage, using a brush to sweep the stubborn ones off.
Cleaning is easy as the rubber pad isn't attached in any way so they can be washed separately.
The reasons I'm giving this four stars instead of five:
1) It slides around a bit as it is just a metal tray sitting on the counter. It could really use some thin rubber feet, I added rubber stickers to the bottom for this. Without the feet I slowly end up pushing the tray to the side just from dosing.
2) The rubber block, while very sturdy and durable, gets marks on it from tamping. I cool my portafilter between shots so the marks aren't from me melting the rubber - it's just from the pressure. Not every tamp does though so after using this several times a day for three months I now have perhaps eight or nine marks on it. The marks aren't terrible, in fact they aren't entirely clear upon first glance, instead the issue is that they make it look like it is always dirty (especially if you don't look close enough to see that they are marks).
3) One of my edges had an ugly dent in it when I received it, the packaging was pristine so this must have been a manufacturing defect.
